There
are two core Big Brothers Big Sisters programs
seeking volunteers:
In
the community-based program, volunteers provide children
and youth -- our "Littles" with individualized
time and attention on a regular basis, typically 2 to 4 times a month
for 2 to 3 hours. During these weekly or bi-weekly
outings, filled with conversations and shared
activities, they develop a relationship that helps youth
manage the every day challenges that are part of
"growing up." During
the time with their Big, children gain new skills,
explore new interests and expand their experience base
beyond their family or neighborhood.
Through simple friendship, Bigs experience the joy of helping
children discover a world of possibilities and opportunities.
Community-based matches are flexible friendships
built on the unique interests of Bigs and Littles. Volunteers
(ages 19 and older) form a friendship with a child. Matches
participate in various activities two to four times per month.
Bigs and Littles might go rollerblading, play a board game or
read a book—whatever fits their interests.
Through our school-based program, volunteers offer
children and youth individualized time and attention on
a consistent basis, with the venue being the child's
school rather than the community. Teachers
identify those children who can most benefit from an
extra caring adult in their lives. Volunteers and
children meet regularly during the school year --
typically each week, utilizing the resources available
within the school building.
-
Site Coordinators -
Retired teachers, or other adult volunteers, to supervise one of our
Homework Connection after-school tutoring-sites
in which elementary students are mentored one-on-one by high
school students.
Time Commitment: one
day per week for 90 minutes, for 20 weeks during the
school year.
Responsibilities: take attendance and
ensure all children are safely picked-up after the
session.
Requirements: at
least 18 years of age; outgoing and enthusiastic leader.
-
School-Based Mentors
-
Volunteers meet with their Littles for one hour a week at
one of our school locations from October to May.
School-based Bigs build trusting relationships with their
Littles. Bigs are not private tutors, simply good friends,
and your activity choices are based on what you and your Little
enjoy.
